We´ll make a stop at Muñoz Beach where we´ll have lunch. After relaxing for a while, we´ll continue our trip until we arrive at Baqueanos Camping site, situated in the middle of an amazing landscape where we´ll finish our day trip with a nourishing snack. |
| Days 2 & 3 |
Mascardi lake. (B, L, D) This beautiful lake located in the south of the National Park is also known as “the 7 colours lake” after the different shades of blue that can be discovered while paddling Catedral and Tronador branches. As this lake has a “V” shape, we can have a different perspective of the surrounding mountains, specially Mount Tronador (3500 m.a.s.l) Itinerary: Transfer to the South coast of the lake where the River Fresco ends, on one of the most beautiful beaches. After preparing all the equipment and talking about security measures, we´ll set off. We´ll navigate alongside the east coast heading south for approximately 3 hours, if there is some wind we´ll probably take a bit longer, and then we´ll turn to the west alongside a series of peaceful beaches where we will stop for lunch. After resting for a while, we´ll keep on paddling heading west among small islands full of native flora until we reach Los Rapidos Campsite where we´ll spend the night. A unique sunset can be enjoyed here because this is where Middle River Manso is born. We´ll have a typical “argentinian asado” with good regional wine to rest a lot and gather strength for the next day. Everything is quiet in the morning, so you’d better relax and enjoy yourself while we take care of the breakfast… We´ll set off Tronador Branch among reeds heading North West. If the weather allows us, we´ll cross the lake towards Isla Corazon (Heart Island), a tiny island located in the middle of Tronador Branch with a spectacular view. We´ll make a stop to drink some “mate”, tea or coffee and then we´ll continue our trip to the mouth of the Upper Manso River. We´ll be able to appreciate in front of us the majestic Tronador Mount, with its impressive glaciers and rocky peaks. We´ll stop for lunch right here. We´ll keep on paddling towards the end of the lake, crossing the mouth of the Manso River which sweeps sediments that mix up with the turquoise waters of the lake. |
| Day 4 | (B, L, D) Early in the morning, we start the first stage of our trek crossing the Manso River at the western end of Lake Mascardi. Walking along the crystaline pools of the Azul stream we follow the valley up to the first lagoon we will visit. Encircling the lagoon and its rocky landscape, we make a stop for lunch on the far side , and then we climb the ridge that will leave us on the high mountain route to the Ilon Lagoon. From this point we can see both Lake Nahuel Huapi and Lake Mascardi. We finish our last climb, trekking along the rocky Jujuy Lagoon, to reach an amazing viewpoint of Mount Tronador in all its splendour. Its all downhill now towards the Ilon Lagoon and our campsite for the night on its sandy beach. We enjoy dinner watching the patagonian stars reflection on the lagoon. Trekking time: 11 hours. Linear Distance: 22 km. Altitude gain: 1400 metros. Terrain: trails, rocks, bogs. |
| Day 5 | (B, L, D) After lunch we begin our trek towards the Meiling Refuge at 2000 meters following the valley of the Castaño Overo. We follow up the Castaño Overo valley with an amazing view to the Castaño Overo Glacier surrounded with a stunning volcanic landscape. |
| Day 6 | (B, L) After breakfast we have the chance to gear up with glaciar equipment (plastic boots, crampons, ice axe, harness and helmet) and explore the glacier just 200 metres away from the refuge. We trek along crevasses up to 40 meters deep and learn the basics about ice gear, we end our tour by trying a bit of ice climbing in one of the crevasses. The tour in the glacier is 100% safe and done according to the groups expectations. We return to the refuge for lunch and get ready to go back to Bariloche. |
